Aunt Jemima - 120 Years in the Making
In 1889 two gentlemen by the name of Chris Rutt and Charles Underwood developed the first ready mix, Aunt Jemima.
The name came from a vaudeville song by Billy Kersand called "Old Aunt Jemima"
A year later, RT Davis bought the struggling Aunt Jemima Manufacturing Company and brought Aunt Jemima to life by hiring Nancy Green as spokeswoman.
Nancy played the part for over 30 years before her death in 1923. In 1933 Quaker Oats, who acquired Aunt Jemima Mills and the Aunt Jemima brand in 1926, hired Anna Robinson to play the character at the Chicago World Fair in 1933.
Since then, Aunt Jemima has received the Key to the City of Albion and a variety of different actresses have played the character when visiting the city for fundraisers.
Today the Aunt Jemima range includes ready mixes for pancakes, waffles and cakes, syrups and various flour types. It is a brand you know you can trust.
